Why this legend matters

Fela Ransome-Kuti was born in Abeokuta in 1938 into a family of teachers, activists, and public thinkers. Music and protest were never far apart in his world. In London he absorbed jazz and highlife; in the United States he encountered Black Power thought and returned to Lagos transformed.

That transformation produced Afrobeat — long-form rhythm, urgent horn lines, political pressure, and grooves strong enough to hold both dance and dissent at once. Fela made the bandstand a place where music, identity, and power collided.

Signature style

Extended 20-min compositions, call-and-response, polyrhythmic percussion

Impact line

Fela built the Kalakuta Republic commune and declared it independent from Nigeria.
