Why this legend matters
Toumani Diabaté was born into the legendary Kouyaté-Diabaté griot lineage in Bamako, Mali. The kora was not a novelty in his world. It was history, memory, and social function.
What Toumani changed was the scale of possibility. His solo album Kaira proved the kora could sustain a whole musical narrative alone, and his collaborations showed the instrument could travel globally without losing its identity.
